ResumoThe present work aims to study the in°uence of plasma potential (PP) in the layer thickness obtained by Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII) in the Ti-6Al-4V alloy at 800oC, using nitrogen gas. It is expected to obtain a thicker layer, to enhance further the already excellent surface mechanical properties of this alloy and improve its wear resistance. Treatments by PIII at 800oC were carried out during 120 minutes with low PP (90V) and high PP (420V). An electron shower source was used to lower the potential in the ¯rst case. In the sample treated in high PP, the nitrogen rich layer thickness is approximately 100 nm (measured by Auger electron spectroscopy - AES) and the maximum values of hardness is 21.5 GPa, in the treated surface. The hardness pro¯les were obtained by nanoindentation technique and the hardness values of the untreated sample were around 4.0 GPa to 5.5 GPa. The Ti-6Al-4V specimen treated at low PP presented depth layer of 1000 nm (measured by glow discharge optical spectroscopy - GDOS) and its maximum value of hardness were around 19.0 GPa. Another sample was treated during 240 minutes at low PP, resulting in a modi¯ed layer of approximately 1500 nm (measured by GDOS) and the reached value of hardness was about 19.5 GPa. These results con¯rm that in the lower plasma potentials, a greater quantity of nitrogen ions are difused into the material surface (due to a lower sputtering rate), resulting in deeper treated layers with better mechanical properties as wanted for applications where the alloy has contact with another surfaces.
